Dead or Alive 6 Last Round Developers Explain Why Costumes Aren’t More Sexual

In a new interview with the Japanese publication Famitsu, Dead or Alive 6 Last Round project manager Tsuyoshi Iuchi acknowledged that the team knows fans want to see more revealing costumes in the game. However, when creating new outfits, the team decided to focus less on maximum sexuality and more on ensuring players genuinely want to use them for a long time.

According to Iuchi, the costume approach in Dead or Alive 6 was somewhat different, as the developers tried to release a large number of outfits that suited multiple characters at once. The team decided to change this concept for Dead or Alive 6 Last Round. Every new costume should now feel like a fully realized look for a specific fighter rather than just another filler outfit for a collection.

At the same time, the team fully understands that a portion of the audience expects explicitly sexual costumes from Dead or Alive. Iuchi explained that overly revealing outfits carry an unexpected drawback, which is that players may use them less often in a competitive game. The reason for this, according to him, includes a sense of embarrassment felt by the player.

The developer cited ranked matches as an example. Based on his observations, even swimsuit costumes appear relatively rarely there, because players prefer to choose other clothing options during competitive play. Therefore, the team decided against making sexuality the primary criterion when creating new costumes.
