Creator of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Says Game Will Spark a New Wave of Ambitious Indie Projects

Guillaume Brosh, the head of Sandfall, said in an interview that the studio doesn’t plan to expand its headcount. He explained that modern development tools are both more accessible and more powerful, enabling small teams to produce experiences on par with large-scale blockbusters while preserving flexibility and a singular creative voice. He expects more studios like Sandfall and more games in the vein of Clair Obscur to emerge.

“We’ve travelled extensively across Asia and visited a number of Chinese studios. I think we’re at the dawn of a new wave of development. With today’s technology it’s much easier to build projects that feel larger than a team’s raw resources.”

He added that he increasingly encounters early prototypes from compact but driven teams:

“These games look stunning and play beautifully. It’s the beginning of a new era — projects that aren’t afraid to take risks, with distinctive aesthetics and strong artistic ambition.”

Brosh noted that he’s drawn inspiration from titles like Hellblade and A Plague Tale: Innocence. In his view, they demonstrated that a small team can still deliver a visually striking hit.

“We learned you can dream big even with fewer than 50 people.”
