Creator of Call of Duty and Dead Space Outlines Three Steps to Save Game Development

Glen Schofield, the creator of Dead Space and a former Call of Duty director, said in an interview that the games industry is “ailing” and needs “remedy.” Speaking at Gamescom Asia, he outlined three steps he believes could help restore its former shine.

The first is large-scale training to teach developers how to work with artificial intelligence. Schofield argues that AI is inevitable, and studios should proactively equip their teams with those skills.

He also urged people not to fear AI: “Use it as a tool. Let the lawyers sort out the rights.” He believes that advances in technology, together with renewed interest in narrative-driven games, will eventually return growth to game development.

The second step is to place experienced leaders in charge of major projects. According to Schofield, many failures result from poor leadership choices: “You spend hundreds of millions, yet give control to people who have never shipped a game.”

The third proposal is to revive the E3 expo. Schofield contends that its disappearance weakened the industry and stripped developers of a major platform to showcase their creativity.
