Remarkably, this marks the first time in our more than 30-year history that a Dragon Quest title graces our cover. The feature celebrates the remake and traces the franchise’s roots all the way back to 1986 in an accompanying retrospective.
The cover art highlights the remake’s distinctive aesthetic. Square Enix collaborated with a premium doll maker to craft physical figures of the protagonist and their companions, which were scanned into the game. That, combined with environments modeled to resemble handcrafted dioramas, gives the world a warm, tactile feel. The cover image below captures Prince Kiefer, the Hero, and Maribel trying to evade the gaze of a menacing golem.

For the feature, video editor Alex Van Aken and I flew to Tokyo to visit Square Enix’s Shibuya office, spend hands-on time with the game, and interview the development team. We also conducted an extended, 90-minute conversation with one of the franchise’s most important figures — details we’ll share in the full package. Expect additional exclusive articles and videos across November as we publish more from our coverage.

Be sure to visit Game Informer on November 4 for the full issue launch and a reveal of the other features, previews, and reviews included in the magazine. Visit our subscription page to sign up and receive 10 issues annually—both print and digital—delivered to you.
