Commander Shepard Voice Actors Urge Action to Save Mass Effect
The news that BioWare is closing its doors and that work on Mass Effect: Universe has ended landed hard with fans this week. Players are now rallying in huge numbers to rescue the future of the much-loved sci-fi action RPG series. Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer, the original voice actors behind Commander Shepard, are the latest prominent names to join the campaign. Both are working to keep Mass Effect alive and to draw in more supporters.
Many fans were already uneasy about several franchises after Electronic Arts was acquired by Saudi Arabia’s PIF and a group of private equity partners. Those worries proved justified. Only a few months later, BioWare has been shuttered and its most anticipated project, a new Mass Effect game, has been scrapped.
The Mass Effect trilogy is made up of three groundbreaking, story-driven sci-fi adventures. Its memorable characters invite deep emotional attachment, and its detailed lore supports a story that is both intricate and absorbing. Mass Effect 5, now known as Mass Effect: Universe, was announced almost six years ago. Fans were still eagerly awaiting it, so it is no surprise that they were devastated to learn it would never arrive. The community is now doing everything it can to save the series. The movement has grown beyond anyone’s expectations, and even the Canadian government is reportedly weighing whether to step in and support BioWare.
Commander Shepard’s voice actors want to bring Mass Effect back
A fan petition is spreading quickly across social media and has gathered 130,000 signatures in just three days. Jennifer Hale, who voices the female version of Commander Shepard, addressed the situation on X. She urged fans to help “bring Mass Effect back to life.”
Hale described a future she likes to imagine. Fans launch a Kickstarter, a few investors come on board, and an inspired game studio joins in. Together they form a collective that revives Mass Effect for the community, for the creators, and for everyone who loves it.
Mark Meer, who voices the male Shepard, quoted Hale’s post with a fitting reply. He said he had just seen his friend Jennifer Hale share an idea he thought was a good one: save Mass Effect. He told fans to hold the line and sign the petition. The message echoed some of Shepard’s most memorable lines.
The backlash over BioWare’s closure has been fierce, but a fan petition is unlikely to soften EA’s cold corporate heart. Even so, it is moving to watch a community fight for something it believes in. As Garrus might say, it has been a damn good ride, and here’s hoping this isn’t the end of the road.
