Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Becomes Universal’s Highest-Grossing Film in History

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic poem has claimed Universal Pictures’ all-time studio record from Jurassic World, which held the top spot for 11 years.

The Odyssey has become the highest-grossing film in the history of Universal Pictures. Over eight weeks, the film’s worldwide box office gross reached $1.684 billion, allowing it to surpass Jurassic World, which earned approximately $1.677 billion in 2015.

Of that total, $600.5 million came from North America, while the film collected another $1.084 billion internationally. In addition, The Odyssey has become Nolan’s highest-grossing film in its domestic market and the highest-grossing R-rated release in history, besting Deadpool & Wolverine at $1.33 billion.

Earlier, The Odyssey also posted the best international and global opening of Nolan’s career. In the US, the film earned $123.5 million in its opening weekend, setting a record among R-rated Universal releases, while 70mm IMAX screenings brought in a record $6.3 million.

The theatrical run of The Odyssey is still ongoing, meaning its lead over Jurassic World will continue to grow.
