Bungie Downsizes Following Weak Marathon Performance
Following a difficult period marked by declining performance for the Destiny franchise and a lack of mainstream player traction for Marathon, Bungie has drastically reduced its workforce from about 1,600 employees down to approximately 500 and put its nearly 20,000-square-foot Bellevue office up for sublease.
Bungie is facing severe problems after the Destiny series stopped delivering its previous results and Marathon failed to attract a large number of players. This led to massive layoffs. Following Sony’s acquisition, the company employed about 1,600 people, and reports indicate that roughly 500 remain now.
Bungie has now listed its nearly 20,000-square-foot complex in Bellevue for sublease. The studio confirmed the information and stated:
Bungie is exploring options to sublease its campus in Bellevue, Washington. Several years ago, the studio transitioned to a digital-first working model, and this step reflects the changing needs of the team and the effectiveness of remote collaboration. Bungie will continue to maintain a presence and a physical office in Bellevue.
Bungie’s future remains unclear. Sony bought the studio for $3.6 billion, and many fans consider that decision questionable. At the time of the deal, Bungie was reportedly working on six games, and a recent report states that most of them have been canceled.
