Players worry that the legal teams at Rockstar Games and Take-Two will take issue with a new project.

A couple of videos from a modder named NokronDweller recently went viral in the Grand Theft Auto community. The modder published gameplay footage of a project titled “GTA IV (GTA 3 PROJECT)” on their YouTube channel of the same name.

The project recreates classic Grand Theft Auto III inside the engine of the newer GTA IV. The shared videos showcase a stylized main menu alongside alternative character artwork from GTA III.

The developer diaries currently cover the early portion of GTA III, stretching from the bridge escape scene to meetings with the first employers. This version incorporates core mechanics from GTA IV, including a GPS radar that charts a route to required destinations.

NokronDweller is recreating both the missions and their accompanying cutscenes. Players worry that Rockstar will dislike the work and that lawyers could soon demand the project be shut down. The modder has not shared implementation details and has not yet made the files publicly available.

Grand Theft Auto IV remains popular to this day. Various mods continue to release for the game, including an actively developing unofficial remaster that recently added the prominent NVIDIA DLSS 5 library alongside support for DLSS RR 4.5 (Ray Reconstruction).
