Blizzard Shifts Diablo 5 Formula to Mirror Dragon Age and Baldur’s Gate

Diablo V will dispense with familiar towns and safe zones, replacing them with a caravan featuring companion characters inspired by Dragon Age and Baldur’s Gate.

One of the main changes will be a caravan that travels alongside the hero. Players can rest inside it, converse with characters, and experience something reminiscent of camps from classic story-driven RPGs.

Jennifer Hepler, a BioWare veteran who worked on Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, and Dragon Age: Inquisition, is writing Diablo V. At BlizzCon 2026, she confirmed that her experience creating traditional RPGs directly influenced the new system.

The caravan brings some of the best elements of traditional RPGs into the Diablo action RPG formula, offering something like a camp from Baldur’s Gate or Dragon Age where you can interact with companions. These aren’t Dragon Age companions where you develop skills, give them outfits, and things like that, but these are characters with their own personalities… so I think my background in traditional RPGs definitely proved to be a strong point when developing this element.

At the same time, Blizzard does not intend to turn Diablo V into Dragon Age. The caravan characters will have their own personalities and add an extra narrative layer to the game.
