The series has never been especially popular in the region, but this still marks a record low.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 endured a notably rocky launch. Japanese retail figures show the game moved only 12,311 physical copies in its first week (plus 1,800 units of the PS4 edition) — the weakest opening in the franchise’s history in Japan.
By way of comparison: even Call of Duty 3, which arrived in 2007, sold 14,177 copies.
Japan has never been a core market for Call of Duty, but with reports indicating European sales of Black Ops 7 have dropped by roughly 50% versus earlier entries, the outlook for Microsoft and Activision is far from encouraging.
Activision previously said it was pleased with how players have received Black Ops 7, but the publisher has remained silent on actual sales figures.
