Black Mirror Returning to Netflix for New Season

An eighth season of Black Mirror is currently in production at Netflix. According to Variety, filming began over the summer, though the streamer has not yet announced a release date. Series creator Charlie Brooker returns to write and executive produce the new season alongside Bisha K. Ali.

Brooker spoke about the renewal with Netflix’s Tudum in January, sharing his plans for the upcoming run of stories.

“Black Mirror will return, and hopefully it’ll be more Black Mirror than ever. I can confirm that Black Mirror will return, just in time for reality to catch up with it. So, that’s exciting. That chunk of my brain has already been activated and is whirring away,” Brooker said.

The sci-fi anthology series debuted in 2011 on the British network Channel 4 before moving to Netflix. Taking its title from the dark glass of turned-off phone and computer screens, Black Mirror explores near-future dystopian scenarios rooted in modern technological anxieties. The show currently spans seven seasons comprising 33 episodes, one special, and the interactive standalone film Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

Critical response has remained divided throughout the run. While some reviewers praise its trenchant observations on modern society, others argue its messaging can feel heavy-handed and cynical. The anthology structure naturally leads to varied reactions, with individual episodes resonating differently across the audience.

The series has earned substantial industry praise, winning multiple Emmy Awards. Episodes from Black Mirror took home the award for Outstanding Television Movie for three consecutive years, with honors going to “San Junipero,” “USS Callister,” and Black Mirror: Bandersnatch between 2017 and 2019. Even as some viewers argue the fifth and sixth seasons dipped in consistency, the phrase “It’s like we’re living in a Black Mirror episode” remains a fixture of modern cultural commentary.
