Bill Skarsgård Cast as Lead in Kojima’s Physint, a Metal Gear Solid Spiritual Successor

Kojima Productions has officially secured its leading man for the highly anticipated espionage project, Physint. Serving as a spiritual successor to the iconic Metal Gear Solid franchise—a series mastermind Hideo Kojima spearheaded for decades prior to his departure from Konami—this upcoming title represents a return to his roots in the stealth-action genre. Although the game remains in early development, the studio has announced that acclaimed actor Bill Skarsgård will anchor the cast in the starring role.

Skarsgård brings a wealth of dark and compelling screen presence to the project, having recently terrified audiences as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the modern It film adaptations, portrayed the iconic Count Orlok in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, and stepped into the suits of the calculating Marquis Vincent de Gramont in John Wick: Chapter 4.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to confirm that Bill Skarsgård will headline PHYSINT,” Hideo Kojima shared in a recent press statement. “We have long admired each other’s creative endeavors, and I am honored to embark on this unprecedented journey alongside him. The initial costume fittings, high-resolution body scans, and camera tests we undertook with Bill and Charlee earlier this year have filled me with absolute confidence in our overarching vision.”

The “Charlee” mentioned by Kojima refers to Charlee Fraser (recognized for her standout work in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Anyone But You). She was previously announced as part of the ensemble cast alongside esteemed international actors Ma Dong-seok—widely known as Don Lee from Train to Busan and Marvel’s Eternals—and Minami Hamabe, celebrated for her breathtaking performance in Godzilla Minus One.

Development on Physint has taken a dramatic pivot. Initially unveiled as a PlayStation-exclusive publishing venture, industry reports recently confirmed that Sony and PlayStation have parted ways with the project. According to sources at Bloomberg, the split stemmed from missed internal developmental milestones, ballooning production budgets, and underwhelming financial returns from the Death Stranding franchise relative to Sony’s expectations.

However, the setback was short-lived. Xbox swiftly stepped in to secure publishing rights for the ambitious espionage thriller. This partnership culminated in Kojima’s surprise appearance during the closing moments of Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show presentation.

This collaboration marks another major venture between Xbox and Kojima Productions, who are already teamed up for the experimental first-person horror title OD – Knock, which features performances by Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer.
