Bethesda Embraces Surprise Releases — Oblivion Remastered Is Just the Beginning

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered turned out to be a success for Bethesda despite minimal marketing and no formal announcements. Director Tom Mastain said in an interview that the company will likely repeat this approach in the future.

Attention spans are very short these days. A surprise release is an intriguing tactic. I don’t know when we’ll do it again, but I hope we manage to. It’s fantastic to grab the internet’s attention for a day and give people what they want immediately after the announcement.

That tactic has already worked with Hi-Fi Rush. It also has the backing of studio head Todd Howard:

Todd Howard has long wanted surprise drops. It’s a perfect way to say, “Here it is — play it right now.” That means a lot to us.

Bethesda acknowledges that announcements for new titles, like The Elder Scrolls VI, often frustrate players because of the long wait. The next surprise release might not be limited to TES or Fallout — it could also come from MachineGames as a new project.
