BBC Outlines Production Requirements for New Season of Doctor Who

The company is searching for a team to define the future of the franchise.

BBC has started accepting proposals from production companies for the next era of Doctor Who and revealed requirements for the upcoming series. BBC wants a project that will look “cinematic, distinctive, and scaled,” featuring a fresh approach to world-building, visual effects, and storytelling.

At the same time, the series must retain the core traits of Doctor Who, which include adventure, tension, humor, and stories about human nature. Another mandatory requirement is the creation of at least one new companion for the Doctor.

Producers will be able to choose the format of the future season themselves, as BBC allows for either serialized overarching stories or standalone monster-of-the-week adventures. The network also does not insist on the classic single-showrunner model and is ready to consider a more flexible structure involving multiple writers.

The initial submissions from participants in the competition must be received by October 2. Interviews with finalists will take place in January, and BBC plans to select the new team in March. The network expects to return Doctor Who to screens in the 2028-2029 season.
