Battlefield Was Originally the Dungeons & Dragons of Shooters — DICE Producer

There’s ongoing debate about whether the Battlefield series can overtake Call of Duty this year, but Battlefield’s original intentions were quite different.

In an interview, DICE senior producer David Sirland pointed out that Battlefield was initially envisioned as a niche shooter.

“When I started, Battlefield was a niche within a niche — almost like Dungeons & Dragons among shooters. I think Battlefield has endured because the core experience was founded on very ambitious goals from the beginning,” added Jeremy Chubb, a DICE producer.

The franchise has come a long way from its humble origins, and the same can be said of its main rival, Call of Duty. Vince Zampella, the current head of Battlefield and co‑founder of Infinity Ward, spoke about how Call of Duty came to be.

“The only reason Call of Duty exists is because EA acted terribly,” he recalled, explaining that he left EA after a dispute over Medal of Honor more than twenty years ago.
