Batman, Mortal Kombat and Harry Potter Won’t Be PlayStation Exclusives — Sony Abandons Purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery

Sony is not pursuing Warner Bros. Discovery’s major franchises. The company has publicly indicated it does not plan to acquire the Batman, Mortal Kombat, or Harry Potter properties.

Warner Bros. Discovery has put itself on the market and is evaluating “strategic options.” Initial offers have already been submitted. The studio’s portfolio includes Game of Thrones, Batman, Mortal Kombat and Harry Potter — yet not every industry participant is prepared to engage in a deal of that magnitude.

According to the Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Sony has withdrawn from discussions and is not interested in buying Warner Bros. Discovery.

Chief Executive Hiroki Totoki affirmed this position, saying:

“We are not seeking large-scale deals or mergers in the film business at this time. Our focus is on strengthening core areas: anime and video games.”

Totoki stressed that the company is prioritizing markets with clear growth potential rather than pursuing aggressive acquisitions. He pointed to anime as offering the strongest upside, forecasting double-digit growth for the sector.

Earlier reports had suggested Sony was interested in Warner’s gaming arm and in securing rights to Mortal Kombat, the Batman: Arkham series and Hogwarts Legacy, but the firm’s current stance appears to put those rumors to rest.
