Success wasn’t instantaneous. For a long time, Embark Studios struggled to nail down a cohesive vision for their project.
The extraction-based adventure Arc Raiders eventually emerged as a major hit, but the game’s initial form was worlds apart from what was released.
The development team spent three years debating the project’s core concept. During the GDC 2026 conference, Production Director Caio Braga reflected on those challenging early stages:
From Braga’s perspective, the early iteration of Arc Raiders felt more like a “boss-slaying race filled with hurdles”:
Braga described a period of “playtest battles” within Embark Studios, where each internal session essentially showcased a fundamentally different prototype. With a team of roughly 120 people at the time, various “factions” fought to see their specific vision prevail.
Ultimately, Embark decided to invest in external testing, which revealed the game was only “occasionally” fun. Despite the lukewarm results, the creators remained steadfast in their potential. They successfully convinced Nexon to maintain their investment while the team underwent a significant “reboot.”
This pivot eventually allowed them to refine Arc Raiders into the version that players finally got to experience.
Braga pointed out that one of the most transformative decisions was the deliberate choice to decelerate the game’s overall pace:
