Ang Lee’s Hulk Is Now Streaming Free on YouTube

Ang Lee has built a career across a wide range of genres. He made his feature debut with the dramedy Pushing Hands, directed the romantic drama Brokeback Mountain, brought martial arts to global audiences in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and tackled science fiction with Gemini Man and the 2003 comic adaptation Hulk.

Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe centralized the brand, Marvel properties were scattered across Hollywood. Sony held Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man series, while 20th Century Studios handled the X-Men films, Mark Steven Johnson’s Daredevil, and early attempts at Fantastic Four. Lionsgate distributed two Punisher movies, and New Line Cinema produced the Blade trilogy.

Universal joined the superhero landscape with Lee’s Hulk, starring Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Sam Elliott, and Nick Nolte. During a period when the X-Men wore black leather and films like Blade and Ghost Rider leaned into grounded aesthetics, Lee took a radically different creative path.

Does Ang Lee’s Hulk still hold up?

The visual structure of Hulk stands out immediately. Rather than treating the material as a standard action film, Lee framed the story to resemble the physical experience of reading The Incredible Hulk.

The movie frequently splits the screen into dynamic panels, complete with borders, gutters, and bleeds. Multiple angles of a character appear at the same time, shots overlap as new frames slide into place, and scenes shift using experimental editing techniques that most mainstream directors avoided. While some of the stylistic choices firmly reflect early-2000s digital editing trends, they give the film a distinct identity.

Later comic adaptations eventually returned to overt comic-strip styling. Edgar Wright added stylized sound effects and video game graphics to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World in 2010. Years later, Sony achieved widespread critical and commercial success when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse incorporated Ben-Day dots, halftone textures, narration boxes, and panel cuts into its animation.

Lee tested those concepts decades earlier. While films like Blade minimized comic roots to appeal to general audiences, Hulk embraced its graphic origins directly. Released before modern franchise formulas and shared continuity rules took hold, the film remains an unusual, auteur-driven entry in superhero cinema.
