NVIDIA maintains its stronghold on the upscaling front with DLSS 4.5, yet AMD is rapidly narrowing the technological divide.
Over the past few months, NVIDIA has significantly refined its upscaling quality from 720p and 1080p base resolutions through DLSS 4.5. AMD remains in pursuit, striving to match these image reconstruction standards with its FSR technology. The team at Hardware Unboxed recently conducted a head-to-head comparison between a leaked version of FSR 4.1 and DLSS 4.5.
Preliminary testing focused on the 4K Performance mode, where FSR 4.1 demonstrated a marked increase in image sharpness, bringing the tech closer to the fidelity of DLSS 4.5’s “Model L.” A clear leap over FSR 4 is visible at the 4:46 mark of the comparison, where FSR 4.1 aligns much more closely with NVIDIA’s flagship solution.
Temporal stability has also seen a boost. At the 5:30 mark, the footage highlights how well FSR 4.1 handles motion during camera pans. Furthermore, complex dynamic elements—such as swaying trees in Star Wars Outlaws—exhibit far fewer artifacts and appear more grounded.
In terms of performance overhead, FSR 4.1 is remarkably efficient, requiring no additional resources compared to FSR 4.0. Players can enjoy the visual upgrades while maintaining their existing frame rates.
Ultimately, AMD has taken a significant stride forward. While the image is noticeably cleaner in motion, the technology still hasn’t quite reached the absolute pinnacle set by DLSS 4.5. Nevertheless, the gap between these competing solutions is steadily shrinking.
