Amazon Games Confirms Future James Bond Titles, but First Light’s Involvement Remains Unclear

Following the immediate commercial success of 007 First Light, further James Bond titles appear to be a foregone conclusion. Developer IO Interactive revealed that its latest project achieved 1.5 million sales within its opening 24 hours—a velocity that significantly outpaced the debut of any previous entry in the studio’s celebrated Hitman franchise.

Although IO Interactive handled self-publishing duties for this inaugural title, Amazon Games leadership suggests a shift in strategy for future installments. In a recent discussion with Polygon, Jeff Gattis, General Manager of Amazon Games, clarified that while the corporation did not possess the full rights during the development of First Light, upcoming sequels will be a collaborative effort between MGM and Amazon Game Studios.

“We didn’t develop First Light,” Gattis explained. “We currently hold a stake because we acquired the intellectual property, but that acquisition occurred after the agreement with IO Interactive was already finalized.”

This approach is central to Amazon’s broader strategy: leveraging its massive entertainment ecosystem to maximize the value of its intellectual property. Gattis noted that the boundaries between film, television, and gaming are becoming increasingly porous. By creating cross-media experiences—like an upcoming Tomb Raider series for Prime Video that complements future game releases—Amazon aims to foster a more interconnected content landscape.

“We are placing significant bets on first-party content,” Gattis added.

While Amazon Games has historically struggled with original titles—seeing projects like Crucible and King of Meat fail to gain traction—the company may find more success by tapping into established, high-profile legacies. If Amazon manages to maintain its partnership with IO Interactive, it could finally secure a strong foothold in the AAA gaming market.

007 First Light concludes in a way that clearly sets the stage for a sequel. Whether this project ultimately delivers the massive returns anticipated by Amazon remains to be seen, but the company is clearly prioritizing long-term investment in these iconic franchises over immediate, singular victories.
