AI in games doesn’t solve all problems and won’t replace humans — former Rockstar co‑founder
Dan Houser, co‑founder of Rockstar Games, spoke cautiously about the use of artificial intelligence in the games industry.
In an interview with Channel 4 he discussed applying AI during development of his new studio Absurd Ventures, noting that the technology is still far from flawless.
The story features many characters driven by AI. We’re experimenting with it, but the reality is that much of it isn’t as helpful as some companies would have you believe. It won’t solve every problem.
He stressed that AI performs well on certain tasks but is not capable of fully replacing people.
There are claims that it can solve any problem, but that’s not true yet. To me, “AI” has become a catch‑all term for future computing, yet it still falls short on many tasks.
Houser remains convinced of the essential role people play in crafting narrative games:
In any commercial endeavour there’s always a risk that money will become a distraction. Still, I see enormous creative potential to build vivid, living narratives — and that’s precisely what we’ve tried to do all along.
