After 17 Years, a Modder Fixed the Lip-Sync Bug in Fallout 3 and New Vegas
A number of long-standing technical issues are being resolved by the community.
Recently, a modder known as Asterra revisited Fallout 3 and New Vegas and addressed a long-standing problem with characters’ lip animations.
During dialogues, NPC lip movements frequently fall out of sync—skipping syllables or even “speaking” while the character is silent (and vice versa). He released a mod called Lip Motion Fix aimed at fixing this behavior.
The “E” bug has affected Fallout for a long time — when a character attempts that sound the game glitches and the lips default to a neutral “mm” shape. It’s especially obvious in words like “Pip-Boy”; lip-reading can make it look like “Pip-Bohm”.
Asterra’s project is split into two parts: a comprehensive dialogue patch and a targeted fix for the “E” bug so NPCs can properly form that sound.
The Lip Motion Fix mod for Fallout: New Vegas is available for free on Nexus Mods, and the Fallout 3 release shares the same name.
