Actor Who Played Arthur in Red Dead Redemption 2 Was Genuinely Sick During Coughing Scenes

The result turned out to be quite authentic.

Various production details for Red Dead Redemption 2 continue to emerge years later. For instance, fans recently drew attention to an interview with the actor who played protagonist Arthur Morgan.

As it turned out, the character’s convincing cough is not entirely the result of acting. During a conversation with YouTube creator Cade Onder, Roger Clark explained that he worked on Red Dead Redemption 2 for five years and had “a lot of colds” during that time.

As a result, Roger shares, the developers received “a lot of material that turned out to be very authentic”:

I’d tell them, “Hey, I’ve got a cold right now—let me record.” And they’d say, “Okay”… it ended up working out well—with a solid amount of phlegm.

The actor was not sick all the time, and sometimes he really did act out the cough. When the interviewer asked Clark whether it was too difficult to record such coughing-fit scenes, he explained that everything was recorded over the course of five years and “if a particularly difficult coughing scene was coming up, we would always schedule [the recording] for the end of the workday.”

Rockstar Games is currently preparing for the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, which is scheduled for November 19 of this year on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
