Aaron Paul Leaves “Invincible” After Supervillain Role Proves Too Much

The Breaking Bad star and Dispatch actor revealed that working on Invincible turned into an utterly draining experience.

Aaron Paul — known for Breaking Bad and for playing Robert Robertson in the recent hit Dispatch — has confirmed he will not return for the fourth season of Prime Video’s animated series Invincible.

On the Kinda Funny Games podcast, Paul explained that voicing the villain Scott Duval (Powerplex) proved so emotionally intense that he opted out of continuing with the project. He said he truly loves the show and has great respect for the team, but the supervillain’s role demanded more from him than he could give.

“I worked on a couple of episodes and was asked to come back for the next season, but I have to admit — I’m a huge fan of this show. I watch every episode. I love it. That said, the part became too much for my mental well‑being. It was emotionally overwhelming. Powerplex isn’t a surface-level villain; there’s a lot happening inside him — real anguish. I fully inhabited him, and honestly, it made me uncomfortable. I just didn’t want to continue… The team is phenomenal. It’s just that what the role did to me, I couldn’t cope with. I couldn’t endure it.”

Because Paul explicitly said he was invited back, it’s reasonable to infer the creators had plans to expand Powerplex’s storyline. Now it’s uncertain whether the character will appear in future episodes and who might step into the role if needed. So far, only that Matthew Rhys has joined the cast (his role remains undisclosed) and that Lee Pace will voice Tragg — one of Robert Kirkman’s universe’s most formidable antagonists — is known.

Invincible, adapted from Kirkman’s comic of the same name, continues to be one of Prime Video’s flagship successes and reportedly holds a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series stars Steven Yeun, Mark Hamill, Gillian Jacobs, Walton Goggins, and Seth Rogen. Seasons four and five have already been confirmed, and the next installment is expected to premiere in March 2026.
