A triple‑A budget would only have worsened Clair Obscur — Creative Director

Many fans praise Clair Obscur for its restraint and for respecting players’ time. Forgoing a AAA-sized budget allowed the studio to concentrate on the core elements that resonate with players. Sandfall earned some of the most positive reviews of 2025 and emerged as a serious Game of the Year contender.

According to Clair Obscur’s creative director on Expedition 33, a AAA budget would have only harmed the game. It would have pushed the project to bloat its scope and diluted the experience’s immediacy.

Clair Obscur’s budget was estimated at under $30 million. In an interview, Guillaume Brosh explained that limited resources proved to be a blessing: the game stayed focused, avoided unnecessary detours, and honored players’ time.

“In a way, constraints help narrow the scope and focus the vision on what matters most. Unlimited resources might have made the game less compelling.”

The game throws players straight into the story with no excess padding. Had Sandfall had boundless resources, Clair Obscur might not have been as successful. Large budgets often inflate scope without improving the experience — sometimes they even lead to mediocrity. In today’s industry, massive budgets can result in cancelled projects and shuttered studios, which is why many teams are returning to leaner, more manageable financing.
