A Major Component of The Witcher Games Shouldn’t Exist — It’s Unnecessary, Says Andrzej Sapkowski

Sapkowski says CD Projekt inexplicably seized on the idea of Witcher schools with “astonishing tenacity”.

Author Andrzej Sapkowski, creator of The Witcher novels, recently told the Reddit community in a Q&A that he is unhappy with the “Witcher schools” concept popularized by the video games. Sapkowski — who began writing Geralt of Rivia’s adventures in 1986 — pointed out that mentions of groups like the “School of the Wolf,” the “Bear,” or the “Viper” were only fleeting in his book The Last Wish and, in his view, did not warrant further elaboration.

A single line about some “School of the Wolf” somehow slipped into The Last Wish. I chose not to develop that idea and even considered it detrimental to the plot. Consequently, I later avoided any mention of “Witcher Gryffindors or Slytherins.” Yet that one line was enough for adaptation teams — especially the game developers — to latch onto the concept with astonishing tenacity and expand it. It was entirely unnecessary.

Sapkowski admitted he has not decided how to proceed with the concept. Options include removing the reference to the schools from future editions of The Last Wish or, alternatively, exploring the subject of Witcher medallions and their links to characters in forthcoming books.
