Many were skeptical that Rockstar Games could deliver something truly exceptional.

This October marks nine years since the announcement trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2. At the time, some observers were highly doubtful and braced for failure.

GameRoll_ compiled a number of player reactions: “Funny that people expected Arthur Morgan to be a terrible lead and thought Leslie Benzies leaving Rockstar would ruin the game.”

“Does anyone else think this game will be completely underwhelming compared to Rockstar’s earlier releases because Leslie Benzies left? Because it sure looks that way. The GTA V DLC felt dull, and this trailer seems equally uninspired. The studio can’t lose its top developer and still churn out work at the same level.”

“It looked alright. I asked myself, ‘If this weren’t from Rockstar, what would I think of the trailer?’ And my reaction was just ‘meh’. No excitement, but no disappointment either.”
