21 Jump Street Sequel in Development with Phil Lord and Chris Miller

Twelve years have passed since the release of 22 Jump Street, the sequel to Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s R-rated action-comedy adaptation of the late-1980s TV drama 21 Jump Street. Franchise creators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, along with stars Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube, appear ready to finally deliver on the comedic promise of the 22 Jump Street post-credits sequence.

According to Variety, 24 Jump Street is currently in development. Rodney Rothman, who co-wrote and co-directed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, will direct the project. Rodney Rothman wrote the script alongside Jonah Hill and Meghan Malloy. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who directed 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street, join the production team as producers.

Producer Neil H. Moritz shared a photo of the 24 Jump Street script on Instagram, adding a caption that accounted for the missing third installment: “It took so long we had to skip one.”

The Jump Street series has played with numbering conventions across its first two films. The original title refers to both an undercover police initiative and the street location of the team base at 21 Jump Street. The sequel shows the division moving across the street following the first movie’s events, which prompts a title change. At the conclusion of 22 Jump Street, the directors run through a massive list of theoretical sequels totaling 23 films, alongside multiple video game and animated spin-offs.

24 Jump Street is finally paying off a post-credits gag

The credits sequence from 22 Jump Street hints at a potential setting for the upcoming film, namely Russia. The complete list of mocked-up sequels includes:

It remains unclear whether 39 Jump Street exists as a proper feature, since the earlier film only highlights a children’s game based on the fictional title.

In the 2012 original movie 21 Jump Street, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill portray struggling police officers Greg Jenko and Morton Schmidt. The pair go undercover to dismantle a high school narcotics ring. Channing Tatum’s once-popular character struggles to fit in while Jonah Hill’s character gains acceptance with the student body. Jonah Hill’s character develops a distraction in the form of a student played by Brie Larson, pulling his focus away from target drug dealer Eric, played by Dave Franco. Ice Cube portrays Captain Dickson, the intense leader overseeing the 21 Jump Street unit. The 2014 follow-up 22 Jump Street relocates the undercover operation to a college campus.

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are now in their 40s, making a return to student life unlikely unless their characters operate as faculty members. Pushing the narrative back into an educational setting would stretch credulity, though that unconventional approach fits the tone of the franchise.
