Zvyagintsev’s “Minotaur” shortlisted for France’s International Oscar entry

Andrey Zvyagintsev’s drama “Minotaur” is officially in the running to represent France at the 2027 Academy Awards. The film has been selected for the country’s preliminary shortlist for the Best International Feature Film category.

Zvyagintsev faces competition from four other French productions: the Léa Seydoux-starrer “The Unknown,” Marine Atlan’s directorial debut “Gradiva,” the two-part biographical epic “De Gaulle,” and the animated feature “Corsage.” The French national committee is scheduled to announce its official entry on September 16.

Other nations have already named their candidates, including Romania with “Fjord” starring Sebastian Stan, Japan with Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Suddenly,” and South Korea with Lee Chang-dong’s “Possible Love,” among others. The Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 14.

“Minotaur” premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it was honored with the Grand Prix. The narrative centers on a high-powered corporate executive (Dmitry Mazurov) navigating the fallout of his wife’s infidelity (Iris Lebedeva) while simultaneously facing mounting professional pressure. The film is slated for international theatrical release on November 20.
