Several developers are enthusiastic about Epic Games’ modern engine.
Recently Reinhard Pollis, CEO of Alkimia Interactive, spoke with GRY Online about the remake of the original Gothic.
The reporter asked what the team would do differently if they were to start the Gothic remake today (would they change anything or choose a different engine?).
Reinhard spoke favourably about their choice of Unreal Engine 5:
Of course, some tasks inevitably take a long time, but we discovered they could have been executed far better and much faster. It would have saved us months of effort. I would probably have waited until Unreal Engine 5 worked through its early teething problems [various technical issues…]. Still, I definitely wouldn’t have swapped UE5 for another engine. I think it enables stunning graphics and animation, provides powerful tools, and it’s no accident that even CD Projekt RED has adopted it.
The Gothic remake is slated for release in 2026.
