Blizzard Discusses PvE Return in Overwatch With a Caveat
Blizzard is open to releasing small story-driven PvE missions for Overwatch, while a large-scale single-player campaign would likely require a separate game and a new development team.
Game Director Aaron Keller shared this information during a discussion with journalists. According to him, previous story missions and Archives events generated significant interest, although the team could not retain the audience over time.
When you look at the campaign that we released, you realize that despite the big hype and the progression of the story, it was not played the way we wanted.
Creating PvE missions takes significantly more time and resources than other event formats. Therefore, Blizzard shifted to animated shorts and comics, directing the freed-up resources toward developing the competitive side of Overwatch.

At the same time, Keller did not rule out the return of PvE, stating, “I would never rule that out.” However, in his view, a full-scale campaign would need to be “a completely new game” with a separate team.
