Wolverine Director Breaks Silence on Massive Insomniac Leak
Towards the end of 2023, Insomniac Games became the target of a catastrophic cybersecurity incident when the ransomware syndicate Rhysida infiltrated the studio’s network. The unauthorized breach compromised an unprecedented volume of proprietary data, encompassing long-term strategic roadmaps, confidential personnel records, and comprehensive developmental assets for the highly anticipated—and previously covert—Marvel’s Wolverine. Following Insomniac and Sony’s refusal to concede to a $2 million extortion demand, the perpetrators published the stolen archives online.
The magnitude of the intrusion represented a watershed moment for the video game industry. Its ramifications continue to reverberate across the studio today, as enthusiasts persistently dissect newly released gameplay showcases against crude, early-stage leaked builds, frequently drawing premature and uncharitable conclusions regarding the title’s production quality.
“The data breach was a tough time for the studio,” Marvel’s Wolverine game director Mike Daly recounted during a press engagement at PlayStation’s London headquarters. “That was not fun. It led to a lot of anxiety.”
Nevertheless, Daly noted that internal solidarity, coupled with steadfast backing from parent company Sony and an outpouring of community goodwill, allowed the team to weather the storm and regain its operational momentum.
“We got through it, I think, because the studio did a great job supporting each other, Sony did a great job supporting us, and our fans supported us too,” Daly explained. “We felt like, despite the data breach, we were able to keep going. And we had the… I’ve said support, I feel like, too many times here, but we had the support of everybody to get back up and running and continue to do our best with the game that we’re making.”
Daly assumed the role of game director in 2024 alongside creative director Marcus Smith, reuniting the veteran leadership pairing responsible for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The duo took over leadership duties from original creative leads Brian Horton and Cameron Christian following internal directional shifts, as documented by Game File.
Ultimately, Daly stressed that the security incident failed to derail the core creative ambitions for the project. “Ultimately, it was disruptive, but it never changed our goals,” he affirmed. “And I do feel like we were able to just get past it and keep doing our best.”
