Will the Amiga 500 Run Sonic the Hedgehog Perfectly? Blogger Prepares to Find Out

Many are skeptical, but an enthusiast aims to prove otherwise with a fresh take on a Mega Drive classic.

When the Mega Drive and Super Nintendo arrived, the Amiga 500 was often mentioned — a 16-bit machine with respectable performance. Still, the Amiga couldn’t keep pace with consoles and the expanding PC market. Fans regularly debated whether the Amiga 500 could handle Sonic, since its specs were similar to the Mega Drive.

There was no answer back then because Sonic was never released for the Amiga 500. The blogger Reassembler is now working on near-perfect conversions of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Amiga 500 and 1200. He previously released Outrun Amiga Edition and has the know-how to achieve impressive results.

Programming for the Amiga 500 is trickier than it looks, but experience and persistence can deliver. We’ll have to wait for the final build to finally settle the childhood question: could the Amiga 500 run Sonic?
