After waking Malon’s father, Talon, outside Hyrule Castle, visit Lon Lon Ranch to find Malon standing near Epona. The young horse will run away if you approach, but Malon explains that Epona likes music despite being wary of strangers.

Take out your ocarina, and Malon will teach you Epona’s Song: X – Y – A – X – Y – A. Play it to bring Epona over. For now, though, both Link and Epona are too young to go riding.

Once you have collected all the Spiritual Stones and can travel into the future, return to the ranch during the daytime. Ingo has taken control of the property and renamed it Ingo Ranch.

Speak to Ingo by the field and pay 20 rupees for a ride. Inside the enclosure, play Epona’s Song to summon her, then mount her and ride over to Ingo. He’ll challenge you to a race.

Beat Ingo’s races

To get ahead, press A a few times at the start and steer toward the inside of the track, blocking Ingo’s path. Continue pressing A periodically to maintain your speed through the finish.

After you win, Ingo will demand a second race and ride a little faster. Stick to the same strategy to defeat him again.

Escape the ranch with Epona

Ingo won’t take his defeat well and will lock you inside the ranch. Circle around, build up speed, and jump over the gate to escape. Epona is now yours!

You can summon her with Epona’s Song whenever you need a ride. Her range is limited mainly to Hyrule Field and a small section of Gerudo Fortress, but she’ll still save you plenty of time on your travels.
