Western Critics Praise Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has officially broken free from its 18-year exclusivity to the PlayStation 3 and its Cell processor. Early critical reviews have gone live for Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 ahead of its scheduled release on August 27, 2026, across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and two generations of Nintendo Switch.
First reviews indicate that Konami addressed the shortcomings of the previous collection’s launch, delivering substantially higher-quality ports. On review aggregator Metacritic, the compilation holds an average score of 85 on PlayStation 5 and 84 on PC, with individual press scores ranging from solid 8s to perfect 10s.
Solid Snake’s PS3-era chapter resolved the technical issues found in the original release. Reviewers broadly praised the game’s performance, noting a native 4K resolution at a stable 60 frames per second without the frame drops that affected the PS3 version. Modern storage hardware has also eliminated the mid-game installation screens between chapters.
Konami’s licensing team retained the original in-game product placement, including the Apple iPod, Playboy magazine, and Regain energy drinks. The controls have been adapted for modern gamepads, featuring standard trigger-based aiming and shooting mechanics.
Beyond Guns of the Patriots, the package contains additional games and supplemental materials:
- Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD, featuring upgraded textures and functional online cooperative multiplayer.
- Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, bringing the Game Boy Color 2D title to modern platforms.
- The Metal Gear Solid 4 Database encyclopedia, digital artbooks, and complete screenplays for every included game.

Reviewers also highlighted several persistent publisher choices. The primary drawback cited is the absence of Metal Gear Online 2, which was not revived for this release.
Konami also opted not to provide a unified launcher, meaning each game operates as a separate standalone application. In addition, critics noted that Hideo Kojima’s cinematic direction, featuring cutscenes running up to 90 minutes, may present a barrier for newcomers entering the series in 2026.
