Werner Herzog dedicates the film “Bad Lieutenant” to David Lynch

The comedy The Bad Batch made its debut in the main competition at the Venice Film Festival, with director Werner Herzog dedicating the film to the late David Lynch.

“We shared a profound mutual understanding of each other’s work, despite our contrasting sensibilities. I truly wish David Lynch could have been among the first to see this film. I would give anything to turn back time and invite him to today’s premiere. Unfortunately, reality doesn’t work that way,”

— Herzog remarked during the press conference. The lead roles are portrayed by sisters Kate and Rooney Mara, who play the Holbrook siblings. The characters are mirror images of one another—dressing identically, speaking in perfect synchronization, and finding themselves drawn to the same man, played by Orlando Bloom.

The sisters’ obsessive bond eventually lands them in legal trouble. The narrative draws inspiration from Greta and Freda Chaplin, twin sisters whom the director encountered many years ago.

“We quickly realized that our shared history—the childhood years spent together, our games, and the unspoken language we developed—would be the key to embodying the Holbrook sisters. It was an incredibly joyful and unique experience filled with laughter,”

— Rooney Mara noted. Kate Mara added that once they established a synchronized rhythm, their dialogue took on a musical, almost song-like quality that felt entirely natural.

The Bad Batch is scheduled for a theatrical release in Russia later this year.
