Todd Haynes to Adapt the Play “The Maids” for the Screen
Todd Haynes (May December) is set to direct a film based on Jean Genet’s play The Maids. The director revealed the project in an interview with Le Point, saying he has an unconventional take on the material, though he isn’t ready to share the details yet.
Haynes also hopes to bring back Cate Blanchett, his collaborator on I’m Not There and Carol. Blanchett has previously appeared in a stage production of The Maids opposite Isabelle Huppert.
First staged in 1947, the play follows two sisters who work as maids for a wealthy mistress. Together they act out elaborate fantasies of humiliating and murdering her. At its core, the story explores class inequality, power and the fluid nature of identity.
No start date for production or release has been announced yet.
