“Harry Potter” Becomes HBO’s Most Expensive Series

The budget for the Harry Potter TV adaptation could make it one of the costliest productions in HBO’s history. According to the financial filings of Plum Jam Productions, the British company tied to the show’s production, its revenue stood at £18.4 million in 2024 and then jumped to £130.6 million in 2025. Deadline reports that these figures suggest roughly £150 million, or $201 million, may have been spent on getting the project off the ground.

That figure is not an officially confirmed budget for the first season.

If Plum Jam Productions’ financials are any guide, a single episode could cost around $25 million. That puts it on par with HBO’s priciest shows: the final season of Game of Thrones was estimated at about $15 million per episode, while House of the Dragon reportedly cost $15–20 million.

The first season, based on the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2026.
