Judi Dench has revealed that her rapidly worsening eyesight means she can no longer act in films or perform on stage. The 91-year-old actress shared the news in an interview with BBC Radio 4.

Dench was diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration in 2012. The eye condition gradually erodes central vision. She now also struggles to read and to recognize faces, and she says she sometimes mistakes strangers for people she knows and tries to hug them.

Despite these limitations, Dench is trying to adapt to her new circumstances and not dwell on her condition. She also admitted that it pains her deeply to be unable to see certain things, such as bluebells in bloom.

Dench’s career spans more than seven decades. She won an Academy Award for playing Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love, and she appeared as M, the head of British intelligence, in eight James Bond films.
