Walter Morris Houser, the father of Dan and Sam Houser, has died. The news was shared by the fan account The Absurd Report on X.
“To my father, who died while I was finishing this book, and to my mother, who—together with him—taught me to love books.”
Dan notes at the start of his book A Better Paradise that his father passed away while he was completing the novel.
Walter Houser worked as a lawyer in the West End and played the alto saxophone. In 1971 he married British actress Geraldine Moffat, best known for her role in the original 1971 film Get Carter.
Both of the Housers make appearances in the Grand Theft Auto games. Walter has a small but memorable cameo in GTA IV, where he plays saxophone on a street corner. If a player approaches him and gives $10, their health is restored, and after doing this three times they unlock a ringtone featuring Sonny Rollins’s 1956 jazz classic “St. Thomas.” A similar tune also appears on Lazlow Jones’s Integrity 2.0 radio station in The Ballad of Gay Tony.
Dan Houser has not disclosed the exact date or circumstances of his father’s death.
