Valve Starts Adding NVIDIA GPU Support to SteamOS

Comment Views: 3

Valve is advancing NVIDIA graphics card support in SteamOS, as certain GeForce GPUs can now run directly within the system and NVIDIA compatibility has been designated as a “top priority.”

Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais reported that NVIDIA drivers can already be enabled in the main SteamOS development branch. At this stage, some GeForce graphics cards are capable of initializing and working directly inside the system.

Griffais emphasized that this does not yet mean full official support is available for all users. Work is ongoing, and the feature remains part of SteamOS development.

A performance issue also exists, because NVIDIA graphics cards in SteamOS currently lag behind similar hardware configurations on other Linux distributions. Valve intends to gradually close this gap.

Expanding GeForce support is especially important for Valve’s plans to use SteamOS on computers outside of devices like the Steam Deck. The company has not yet announced a release timeframe for full NVIDIA support.
