Overwatch’s New Mythic Skin Shows Blizzard Is Finally Mixing Things Up
Overwatch season 5’s mid-season update brings more than the usual assortment of additions. Junkrat’s Loot Hunt returns alongside another round of the Excavation Initiative, while a major story event in Rialto brings Vendetta’s rise and recent downfall to a head. Some of that event’s rewards are reserved for a paid pass. The update also includes an unexpected crossover with Stellar Blade.
Overwatch x Stellar Blade: Eve Protocol skins
The Eve Protocol collaboration introduces five skins inspired by characters from Shift Up’s action game:
- Widowmaker as Eve
- D.Va as Lily, with Toki modeled after a late-game Stellar Blade boss
- Freja as Raven
- Vendetta as Tachy
- Soldier: 76 as Adam

The collaboration runs through November 17. All five skins are available only in the shop; there is no event offering a free crossover skin.
Roadhog receives his first Mythic skin
Roadhog is also getting his first Mythic skin, following his popular revamp at the start of season 5. Named Necrotic Knight, its base version dresses him in silver and toxic-green armor with a plague doctor-style beaked mask.
Higher tiers give the skin a different look, replacing the initial design with scarlet armor, jade-colored ropes, and an imposing skull mask.

Taking Reign brings the story to Rialto
The season’s climactic story event, Taking Reign, sends Doomfist and Overwatch into a confrontation in Rialto. Vendetta, meanwhile, is presumably still imprisoned following the previous week’s animated story.
Taking Reign runs for five weeks and features 24 reward tiers split between free and paid tracks, much like the event passes in Marvel Rivals. The free track includes a recolored epic Sigma skin. The paid track costs 1,000 Overwatch Coins, or roughly $10, and includes a new weapon for Vendetta and a legendary Doomfist skin.
Drives expand beyond competitive play
Blizzard is also changing how drives work. Players gain points for wins and lose points for losses, but competitive mode is no longer the only way to take part. Competitive players can earn a signature tag, while those who prefer Quick Play can pursue legacy weapon points.
After reaching the fourth checkpoint in this season’s drive, players can also choose to equip certain signature tags earned during previous seasons.
