US Army Offers ‘GTA 6’ Time Off as a Reenlistment Incentive
Anticipation for the impending debut of Grand Theft Auto 6 has gamers worldwide strategizing how to clear their schedules. While many are locking in paid time off or preparing suspiciously timed sick leave for November 19, over a decade of waiting has fans ready to drop everything to immerse themselves in Vice City.
Yet for select personnel in the U.S. military, an unconventional route has emerged to guarantee uninterrupted launch-day gameplay—provided they are willing to pledge another two years of active duty service.
In an unexpected intersection of military retention tactics and blockbuster gaming culture, an Army unit based at Fort Stewart, Georgia, is providing an authorized four-day pass aligned with the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 to service members who reenlist.
Originating from the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division, the opportunity applies to qualifying soldiers who finalize a reenlistment agreement between August 1 and November 14. The incentive was initially revealed through a leaked internal memo and subsequently authenticated by military representatives.
Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division, confirmed to PCMag that 20 out of 120 eligible troops had chosen the offer. Speaking with PC Gamer, Tomko clarified that the program is exclusive to the 3rd Infantry Division rather than branch-wide, born from an imaginative career counselor striving to fulfill fiscal year 2027 reenlistment targets.
Unconventional retention incentives are not entirely unprecedented in the armed forces. Oath ceremonies have frequently taken place aboard combat vehicles, inside aircraft, or alongside professional sports franchises, complementing traditional levers like monetary bonuses, specialized schooling, and choice duty assignments.

Meanwhile, Rockstar Games is orchestrating a high-profile promotional campaign leading up to launch. On August 27, Netflix will host a six-hour exclusive early look at extended footage prior to its broader distribution across YouTube and social networks.
Simultaneously, the title has encountered fresh unauthorized disclosures. A leaker operating under the alias “Cyberleek” distributed early gameplay showcasing aerial perspectives across Vice City, combat systems, and taser mechanics, threatening further leaks in objection to the title’s digital-only format.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to arrive on November 19 at a standard price point of $79.99, while the battalion’s promotional reenlistment window closes on November 14.
