Upcoming Birthday & Update on Asset Editor and Console

Concluding Our World Tour & Looking Forward

We’ve just launched our eighth and final Region Pack, marking the last destination on our global tour – at least for now! Although we have a few more travel tips and a contest wrap-up, our journey ends in the Northeast USA with this series. Over the months, 31 exceptional creators have dedicated their efforts to bring you resources from all corners of the globe, and it has been truly remarkable to witness the inspiration these packs have sparked. Thank you for accompanying us on this worldwide adventure!

As we conclude this expedition, we’re eagerly looking to the future. Our anniversary is approaching, and we have something special in store for our players. With that in mind, we want to briefly update you on the status of the console version and Asset Editor for Cities: Skylines II. More information is provided below.

For now, thank you for being part of this journey; we can’t wait to celebrate a decade of Cities with you – so be sure to join us on March 10th!

Console

We continue to make steady progress on the console version, focusing primarily on enhancing performance and stability. However, despite these advancements, there are more elements we need to address before achieving the level of quality and experience we desire for you as our players.

We know many of you are eagerly awaiting the console release, but to manage expectations clearly: we will not launch it before summer. We prefer to avoid premature estimates and instead provide reliable information when we are closer to a launch-ready state.

Our goal remains unchanged: to deliver Cities: Skylines II to consoles in its best form.

Asset Editor

The implementation of the Asset Editor has proven more technically challenging than initially anticipated due to the extensive array of built-in assets affected by the changes, but progress is underway. Our current focus is on eliminating Unity dependencies to ensure smoother, more responsive, and reliable asset loading – both during loading screens and when changing playsets in the Paradox Mods UI. Without this, the game risks freezing for extended periods and becoming unstable. We aim to support subscriptions to a large number of assets with minimal performance impacts.

We are also making the importing and baking of assets more asynchronous to minimize identifier conflicts with serialization. Assets created on different machines can easily cause these, resulting in the game getting confused about which assets it is attempting to load.

Rest assured, we are committed to overcoming these challenges, and our dedicated team is actively working to resolve them. We recognize the significance of custom assets to you and, frankly, to us as well, and we will continue to keep you informed as progress is made. We appreciate your patience and enthusiasm, and we will share more updates as we shape the future of Cities: Skylines together. Stay tuned for our anniversary celebration next week!
