I encountered two distinct dinosaur-themed titles at this year’s Summer Game Fest. The first, The Lost Wild, is an atmospheric survival horror experience where highly intelligent predators relentlessly track your every move. The second, Turok: Origins, is a boisterous, unapologetic shooter focused on clearing rooms of prehistoric threats. Surprisingly, it was the latter that truly grabbed my attention.

During a hands-on session at the event, I powered through two delightfully absurd missions packed with enemies waiting to be taken down. While Saber Interactive’s latest iteration of the Turok franchise isn’t trying to reinvent the genre, it delivers exactly the kind of mindless, high-octane fun I crave in small bursts. Turok: Origins seems to have mastered this specific brand of chaotic entertainment, and honestly? I’m here for it. Sometimes, you just need a straightforward, satisfying experience.

Turok: Origins is a cooperative shooter designed for three players. You and your squad tackle linear missions overrun by dinosaurs and alien forces. The demo featured three distinct character classes: the resilient Bison, the offensive powerhouse Cougar, and the agile archer Raven. Each brings unique tools and capabilities to the fray. It mirrors the structure of a hero shooter, though that comparison might be giving it too much credit for complexity—it’s really just about picking a playstyle and diving into the firefight.

I chose the Cougar class, which provided a shotgun and a devastating ground-pound ability. The combat feels like a classic arcade shooter, with every pull of the trigger feeling punchy and impactful. As waves of aliens swarmed our position, we focused on completing simple objectives like blowing up enemy fortifications. It’s glorious, destructive fun that requires very little mental overhead.

The finale involved a massive T-Rex confrontation. While my teammates used shields and movement-slowing devices to maintain distance, I opted for a more aggressive approach, charging right up to the beast to deliver shotgun blasts at point-blank range. Efficient and incredibly satisfying.

The second level introduced light platforming elements, utilizing rotating waterwheels to traverse the map. A handy feature is the ability to toggle between first and third-person perspectives, which helped immensely—I used the third-person view for platforming jumps and zoomed into first-person whenever I needed precision aim against flying pterodactyls. It ended with another boss, which I handled with a fresh supply of rockets.

As for the narrative context? Honestly, it’s thin, and that’s perfectly fine. The game’s premise—legendary warriors defending the galaxy from an alien dinosaur threat—is essentially just an excuse to start blasting. You don’t need deep lore when the action is this immediate.

If the game sounds simplistic, I say that as a genuine compliment. In an era often dominated by bloated skill trees and heavy RPG mechanics, Turok: Origins is refreshing "junk food" gaming. It’s perfectly structured for jumping in with friends, marking targets, and blowing things up. Sometimes, you don’t need an epic story—you just need a gun and a dinosaur. Turok: Origins delivers exactly that, and it's a hell of a good time.
