Following a massive theatrical run, Pixar’s latest animated film is preparing for its streaming debut. Toy Story 5 arrived in theaters on June 19 and quickly pushed past worries of franchise fatigue, earning $1.1 billion worldwide against a $250 million production budget. Those numbers make the sequel the highest-grossing entry in franchise history and the third-biggest box office hit of the year, trailing only Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey.

Audiences and critics met the sequel with widespread enthusiasm, despite early doubts about continuing the series after Toy Story 4 offered a sense of finality. The movie holds a 93% critical approval rating and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviews highlighting the animation quality, voice acting, and comedy.

When is Toy Story 5 streaming on Disney Plus?

Toy Story 5 will begin streaming on Disney Plus on Sept. 23. Viewers looking to purchase or rent the film digitally on platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV have been able to do so since Aug. 18. This three-month theatrical window matches Disney’s recent strategy for other major releases, including Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, which opened in theaters on May 22 before arriving on Disney Plus on Sept. 2.

Despite the commercial triumph celebrated by the team behind Toy Story 5, Disney cut staff at Pixar shortly after the release. The studio eliminated between 100 and 150 positions from its 1,100-person workforce on July 21. The reduction marked Pixar’s largest round of cuts since May 2024, when the studio dismissed 175 employees, representing roughly 14% of staff.

According to reporting from The Wrap, studio leadership linked the layoffs to the financial performance of Hoppers. That movie generated $389.7 million against a $150 million budget, landing right around the traditional box office breakeven threshold of double a production budget.

Pixar is now turning toward its upcoming theatrical slate. The studio will next release Gatto on March 5, 2027, featuring Mark Ruffalo as the voice of a stray cat wandering Venice, Italy. Further down the pipeline, Pixar plans to release Incredibles 3 in 2028 and Coco 2 in 2029.
