For many Black Mirror enthusiasts, the 2016 masterpiece “San Junipero” wasn’t just an episode—it was a cultural touchstone. The Emmy-winning narrative starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis is now finding a second life on the printed page. A newly launched Kickstarter campaign for a graphic novel adaptation has already obliterated its funding goal within a mere 48 hours of going live.

Originally penned by series creator Charlie Brooker, “San Junipero” follows the reserved Yorkie as she explores the vibrant nightlife of a dreamlike coastal town. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she crosses paths with the charismatic Kelly. What begins as a fleeting encounter evolves into a profound, time-defying romance that challenges the very boundaries of mortality and digital consciousness.

While Black Mirror is often synonymous with technological cynicism and dystopian dread, “San Junipero” remains a celebrated outlier. Its hopeful tone, evocative 1980s aesthetic, and groundbreaking queer love story have earned it a permanent place in the hearts of fans. Nearly a decade later, indie publisher Twisted Comics is revisiting this digital paradise to translate its emotional weight into a stunning visual format with Black Mirror: San Junipero.

The adaptation features a script by Neil Gibson and illustrations by Phil Buckenham, with eye-catching cover art by the renowned Butcher Billy. To further engage the community, the Kickstarter campaign offered unique incentives, such as a raffle that allows select backers to be immortalized as background characters within the graphic novel’s panels.

The enduring popularity of “San Junipero” stems largely from its subversion of traditional tropes, offering its protagonists a rare and hard-earned happy ending. This deep emotional resonance explains why the crowdfunding project reached its target so rapidly. Although a specific release date remains under wraps, the creators have confirmed that the graphic novel is already complete, meaning supporters likely won’t have to wait long to return to the city by the sea.
