The 16th Governors Awards — the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ honorary Oscars — were held in Los Angeles.
Among this year’s honorees was actor Tom Cruise. Although he had been nominated on several occasions, this marks his first time receiving the honor.
“Making movies isn’t just my profession; it’s who I am… It doesn’t matter where you come from: in a theater we laugh, feel and hope together, and that is the strength of this art. I want you to know that I will always do everything in my power for this art form — to support it, champion new voices, and safeguard what makes cinema powerful. I hope with not too many broken bones,” Cruise said in his acceptance remarks.
Other recipients of honorary Oscars included singer Dolly Parton, actress Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas. Nominees for the next Academy Awards will be announced in January. The 98th ceremony is scheduled for March 15, 2026.
This spring Cruise appeared in the eighth Mission: Impossible film, Dead Reckoning. Next year he will headline an untitled project from Alejandro González Iñárritu.
