This Witcher 3 Secret Monster Still Surprises Players 11 Years Later

Years ago, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt players discovered a lucrative early-game shortcut: by ruthlessly farming cows for their hides and cycling through meditation to force the herd to respawn, they could accumulate a small fortune in no time.

In June 2015, patch 1.05 saw CD Projekt Red implement a clever countermeasure to curb this digital gold rush. They introduced the “Bovine Defense Force”—a formidable level 27 chort that manifests instantly if a player kills more than six cows in the White Orchard region. For a low-level wanderer, this beast is an immediate death sentence.

Even though this defensive mechanic has been part of the game for over a decade, it continues to catch newcomers off guard.

Ironically, this fix initially created an even more profitable exploit. If a high-level player managed to slay the level 27 chort, another would simply spawn in its place. Because the creature’s loot was significantly more valuable than cow hides, veteran players found they could “farm” the beast for massive profits. The developers eventually addressed this loophole as well, mandating that Geralt must leave the White Orchard area entirely to trigger a respawn.

As someone who considers The Witcher 3 their all-time favorite game—complete with a tribute tattoo to prove it—I was genuinely surprised to learn about the “Bovine Defense Force” initiative. My personal experience with Skyrim’s legendary “chicken justice” taught me to leave local wildlife alone, so I’ve always steered clear of such antics. However, it is fascinating to see how developers proactively handle players who try to break their game economies.
