Sony Wants to Make a Fifth Spider-Man Film with Tom Holland but Has Not Announced It Yet
Following the phenomenal box office launch of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the leadership at Sony Pictures has addressed the future of the franchise.
Shortly before the premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Tom Holland shared that he already knows how he will one day pass the baton to the next Spider-Man. However, a Variety journalist suggested that after such success, Sony would be unlikely to let the actor go and asked Sony Pictures head Tom Rothman to comment on future plans. In response, the executive compared the situation to asking a Super Bowl-winning coach whether he can repeat his success in the next season:
“I love those questions. It is like if a coach won the Super Bowl, came to a press conference, and was asked, ‘Are you going to win next year?’ The honest answer is we do not know right now. We have been completely focused on this movie for almost two years. I can say one thing: I very, very much hope for a continuation. I have heard that Tom would like to keep playing, and we would be thrilled for his return.”
Producer Amy Pascal also told Variety that she expects to keep Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton, though she emphasized that work on the next installment has not yet begun:
“There is no writers’ room. But if it is up to us, Destin will definitely return.”

According to Pascal, Sony and Marvel Studios enter into separate agreements for each film. The creators make it a point not to launch the next installment in advance and strive to ensure that each picture is perceived as a standalone story:
“Funnily enough, from the very beginning we never planned out what we would do next. I think that is the advantage of this approach: every movie has to be self-contained. That has turned out to be a good formula, because each picture becomes an independent work of art.”
Pascal previously expressed hope that Brand New Day would kick off a new trilogy, but emphasized that this was merely her wish rather than an approved plan by Sony and Marvel.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossed $360 million during its debut weekend in North America, setting a new domestic box office record. The film’s worldwide opening earnings reached $932 million.
